It was a great day. He was with his friends again, up at the cabin next to the trout pond, riding their bikes through the woods. They made paths, crashed through trees and even set up a 15-foot rail from one tree to another. He showed them who was best. He wasn’t afraid to jump off one of the tree branches and slide his bike across that rail. He fell off a few times, even crashed into the other tree, but eventually he rode the whole rail. No one else could. He loved the thrill and he loved being the best at something.

Sterling knew they were always trying to put him down and felt that they were better than him, just because he was drunk most of the time. Maybe that’s why they were mad at him, for being the best today. Sterling was so excited about riding bikes, he barely drank until it started getting dark. It was one of those warm fall days, with the sun shining down on the trout pond making the water look as smooth as glass. At the end of the day, they made a huge fire by the cabin and roasted the hotdogs they brought along. The five of them planned on staying all night and sleeping in the little cabin. It wasn’t even really a cabin, but more like a shed they all put together with scrap wood, with a make-shift window on one side.

Sterling was ready for the long dark night ahead and had his handle of vodka. Since he did the best today, he didn’t care what they said, he was going to take one of the bunks tonight! The others were drinking beer. They were so pissed at him for being the best today. They were telling Sterling he just lucked out. He told them, “No way man, I’m the best and you know it.” He saw the others whispering to each other. He figured they were just jealous, since not one of them could ride the full rail. He beat them and he wasn’t going to let them take that away from him.

But as the night got darker and colder, Sterling felt he needed to drink more and so he did, until the bottle was empty and he crawled into the bottom bunk. Sterling began to toss in his sleep. He could hear a soft swishing sound but was too tired to wake. But the sound got louder and louder. The wind had picked up through the night and the water of the trout pond was now lapping against the bank. It was now pitch dark. Sterling, still not fully awake, heard the rushing of water. He started to realize something or someone was trying to wake him.

He mumbled, “Leave me alone. You know I was the best today.” And then he heard the voice of the little devil man, “You’re never the best. Look who I brought.” Sterling was fully awoken by a popping sound. He jumped out of bed and was frozen.
